LESSON 7: UILLEANN PIPE SHORT ROLLS

'Short Rolls' are used for extra emphasis on an accented beat and are sometimes referred to as 'Doublings'. They are a combination of a grace note and a strike like other rolls except that they are only separated by two identical notes. They are played like the top image but can be written with a "half moon" or a "sideways S looking thing" above or below it. When you see these symbols it means play a roll on that note. For most of these lessons I will be using the "sideways S" but you can use which ever one you like in general.
Short rolls cannot be done on D because there is no way to strike a D.
Whether to play a short roll/doubling or a regular roll when you see the symbol under or above the note is your choice. As you play more you will discover which one sounds better in which situation.
