Lesson 8: Uilleann Pipe Popping

Picture
Popping sometimes called "Barking" because of the sounds it makes is a wonderful characteristic unique to the uilleann pipes.  Any E, F# or G in the second octave can be popped. Popping consists of lifting the chanter off the knee and simultaneously lifting fingers off the chanter to play the desired note and then replacing the chanter back on the knee while the fingers are being replaced.  This is a hard technique to grasp in your first try but eventually you'll get it and once you get the timing down it's quite simple. Pop's are not generally written in sheet music I will notate it for you by placing a "P" over the note. Yes, I know that in normal music putting a "P" over a note means play the note soft, but this is isn't normal music so ever time you see a "P" play a pop.
